2019 Elite Athletic Hall of Fame
The Hall of Fame was created to recognize outstanding athletic performance of ANA Alumni while at the Academy and following graduation. Inclusion in the Athletic Hall of Fame is the highest honor the Academy confers upon those who have excelled as players or coaches throughout the years.
Please join the Academy in recognizing Alumni Athletic Excellence on Thursday, April 25th at 6:30pm at Duffield Sports Center.
Judge Robert Beach, '42 - An avid summer, Judge Beach was instrumental in the formation of Masters swimming. At age 87, he became the oldest person to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco and complete the Golden Gate Bridge Swim.
Bruce Manakas, '72 - After a short lived but successful fencing career at CSULB, Bruce returned to Army and Navy to coach football, track, and soccer. He is the last head football coach to bring the CIF Championship home in 1979.
Chuck Temple, '73 - Upon graduating from Army and Navy with nine varsity letters, Chuck went on to play football at UC Davis. He has coached multiple sports, including football at a Division I High School and fastpitch softball.
Bill Maffucci, '74 - Bill played football at both Army and Navy Academy and UC Davis, receiving a number of athletic awards. He returned to Army and Navy to serve as Offensive Coordinator for the 1979 CIF Championship team.
Vance Manakas, '75 - Vance has had a successful career as an Athletic Trainer at the college level, while also serving as faculty member. He currently holds the position of Athletic Director at Moorepark College.
Cezar Mansour, '84 - Cezar was a star varsity wrestler for four years at Army and Navy Academy. He has since played soccer competitively, volunteering to coach youth soccer for over 15 years.
Derrick Buchanan, '09 - A three-sport athlete at Army and Navy Academy, Derrick went on to play basketball at Humboldt State University. He is currently a middle school teacher and basketball coach in Humboldt County.
With a special welcome to our guest speaker, Dr. John Michels. Dr. Michels played for the Super Bowl XXXI Champion Green Bay Packers and was named their Rookie of the Year. After a career ending injury the following year, he pursued a career in medicine and is currently practicing at Interventional Spine & Pain in Dallas, TX.
