Dear Army and Navy Academy Parents:
I am writing you about the upcoming criminal trial of former Academy administrator Jeffrey Barton, which is currently scheduled to begin on September 24, 2015.
We communicated with you about the arrest of Mr. Barton in October 2013. As some of you know, he was an employee at our school from 1994 to June 2013. At the time of his arrest at his home in Oceanside, he was not an employee of the Academy. The charges against Mr. Barton involve sexual abuse. These are events alleged to have taken place 15 years ago – well before the current administration and Board of Trustees were in place. The criminal trial will determine his guilt or innocence. As you would expect, there will no doubt be media interest and coverage.
It is important for all in our community to know that after his arrest, Army and Navy Academy hired Lisa Friel, one of the most qualified and highly regarded consultants in the area of sexual abuse in the country. We asked her to consult with us on training, procedures and protocols. Ms. Friel also trained our faculty and staff and cadets on aspects of sex abuse. You should also know that Ms. Friel’s expertise was so sought after that she is now working full time for the National Football League (NFL). We truly believe we have received top-of-the-line training from the best in the business and we will continue to regularly train our staff and cadets.
The policies, procedures and training we have done and will continue to do demonstrate the Academy’s unwavering commitment to the safety, health and well-being of all of our cadets. For 105 years, The Academy has been educating and developing leadership and character in our students. We are honored by and dedicated to this mission which we hold to be sacred. Our actions are always grounded in earning and keeping your trust.
I want to thank all in our community who have supported us through the years and during this challenging time. My door is always open should you have any questions about our policies and procedures.
Thank you for your continuing support of this outstanding institution.
Warrior Proud! Warrior Strong!
