The Army and Navy Academy Warriors traveled to Borrego Springs to play the Borrego Springs High School Rams. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by Rudy Regalado, former Major Leaguer with the 1954 Cleveland Indians.
On the mound starting for the Warriors was James DeLucia. Plagued by fielding errors, the Warriors gave up 5 unearned runs to the Rams in the game. After the beginning jitters, the Warriors settled in and played a stellar game of catch-up baseball.
Losing 5-3 going into the fifth inning, the Warriors tied the ball game at 5-5 only to have the Rams come back in their half of the inning to take a 7-5 lead. The Warriors managed one run in the 6th to bring the deficit to 7-6. In the 6th Lucas Howescame in to relieve.
This set the stage for the dramatic comeback by the Warriors.
Losing by two entering the 7th and last inning, the Warriors loaded the bases with two outs when Freshman Isaac Glover hit a towering double to right field that cleared the bases. He also came in to score and the Warriors were up 10-7. One run by the Rams in their half of the inning brought the final score to ANA 10 Borrego Springs 8.
Notable was the two run RBI hit by Freshman Garrett Smith in the first inning and the overall three runs scored by Lucas Howes.
Army-Navy’s next game is at home on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Maffucci Field against High Tech High School.
