The Army and Navy Academy Warriors opened their 2015 baseball season with a non-conference game against Classical Academy, last year’s 2014 Division V CIF Champions. The home game was played at Maffucci Field in Carlsbad.
Third year head Coach Ryan Larson started pitcher Noah Brown in an attempt to slow down the perennial powerhouse team from Escondido. Classical Academy jumped out to a quick first inning two run lead before Brown settled down and only allowed one more run in his 4 inning stint. Said Brown after the game, “Once my nerves calmed down, I was okay!”
The Warriors were led by James DeLucia whose daring base running caused their pitcher to balk and give fits to their catcher who was unsuccessful in throwing him out as he stole second and then third base. He later scored the first run of the season on a hit fromBlake Howard. Lucas Howes also contributed with a two hit, one walk outing.
Freshman Isacc Glover and James DeLucia made some outstanding plays in the field that kept the Warriors in the game. Although they lost by a score of 7-3, the Warriors made a strong showing on defense with no errors. Freshman Garrett Smith pitched the 7th and silenced the Classical bats with a shut-out inning.
The Warriors next game is an away game at Borrego Springs on Monday, March 9 at 3:30. Their next home game is on Tuesday, March 10 at 3:30 on Maffucci Field.
