Sample Language for Bequests

Many Academy supporters have included Army and Navy through a provision in their will. Absent specific instructions to the contrary, all bequests over $5,000 are added to the Academy’s Unrestricted Endowment. Your will is an important legal document that should express your wishes and should be prepared by your attorney.

People generally include Army and Navy Academy in their wills using one of the following methods:

General or Outright Bequest

“I leave (choose one) $_______ or ________ percent of my estate to Army and Navy Academy, Carlsbad, California.”

Specific Bequest

“I leave my (name specific property here) to Army and Navy Academy, Carlsbad, CA.” Examples include: 1,000 shares of XYZ stock, a primary or secondary residence, a horse, a vehicle, boat or airplane, a collection of art or antiques.

Residuary Bequest

(After you have provided for your heirs.) “I leave twenty five percent of the remainder of my estate to Army and Navy Academy, Carlsbad, CA.”

Contingent Bequest

(Remembers Army and Navy Academy if a named heir does not survive you.) “I leave $100,000 to my sister. If she does not survive me, then this bequest shall be made to Army and Navy Academy, Carlsbad, CA.”

Bequests in Trust

Your will can create one or more trusts to provide for specific heirs, often children and grandchildren. Upon their deaths or at the end of the term of the trust, the balance could then be given to Army and Navy Academy, Carlsbad, CA.

These trusts can be charitable trusts that generate an estate tax deduction.
