Honor
This month, we will be learning about Honor. What is honor? The word honor has multiple meanings. Some of them are:
Respect
A feeling of pride or pleasure from being shown respect, or the act of showing respect to someone or something. For example, “It is an honor to meet you.”
Title
A title of respect for a high-ranking official, such as a judge or mayor. For example, “if your Honor please”.
Recognition
A public celebration or recognition of someone or something. For example, “the newlyweds were honored with a dinner given by the bride’s grandmother”.
Privilege
The privilege of being associated with or receiving a favor from a respected person, group, or organization. For example, “I had the honor of serving on the Pulitzer Prize jury.”
Evidence
A symbol or evidence of great respect, such as a title or medal.
Quality
A quality of a person that manifests itself as a code of conduct, including elements such as honesty, compassion, chivalry, and valor.
Do you show honor? What does honor mean to you?
“Honor is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” — Unknown
TODAY IN HISTORY
On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious and anonymous inventor of Bitcoin, released the Bitcoin white paper, introducing the cryptocurrency—and how it could be used—to the world. By design, only 21 million Bitcoins will ever be “mined,” or released into the market.
Titled “ Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System,” the nine-page thesis paper established the basic structure for the Bitcoin network. It also presented the idea of the decentralized cryptocurrency, or an electronic currency (think “digital cash”) that can make transactions with low costs while using no financial institutions or third parties.
