TODAY IN HISTORY

U.S. Troops withdraw from Vietnam

March 29, 1973: Two months after the signing of the Vietnam peace agreement, the last U.S. combat troops leave South Vietnam as Hanoi frees many of the remaining American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam. Americaโ€™s direct eight-year intervention in the Vietnam War was at an end.

In Saigon, some 7,000 U.S. Department of Defense civilian employees remained behind to aid South Vietnam in conducting what looked to be a fierce and ongoing war with communist North Vietnam.

Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month. Women’s History Monthย is anย annual observanceย to highlight theย contributions of women to events in historyย and contemporary society. Celebrated duringย Marchย in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, corresponding withย International Women’s Dayย on March 8, it is observed during October in Canada, corresponding with the celebration ofย Persons Day on October 18. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma Couty Commission on the Status of Women in California started Women’s History Month in 1978. In 1980 President Jiimmy Carter issued a proclamation for National Women’s History Week in March. In 1987, Congrees passed legistation to make March Women’s History Month and the president issues a proclamation each year.ย

Everyday we will highlight a woman that has done extraordinary things to uplift not just women but everyone in the world. Whether it is an invention or entertainment, we will spotlight women who are not just heroes but Sheroes!

Spotlight: Rosie the Riveter

Rosie the Riveterย is an allegoricalย cultural iconย in theย United Statesย who represents the women who worked in factories and shipyards duringย World War II, many of whom producedย munitions and war supplies.ย These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who joined the military. She is widely recognized in the “We Can Do It!” poster as a symbol ofย American feminismย andย women’s economic advantage. Similar images of women war workers appeared in other countries such as Britain and Australia. The idea of Rosie the Riveter originated in a song written in 1942 by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb. Images of women workers were widespread in the media in formats such as government posters, and commercial advertising was heavily used by the government to encourage women to volunteer for wartime service in factories.ย ย Rosie the Riveterย became the subject and title ofย a Hollywood filmย in 1944.

ADMISSIONS: WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH $1000?

As the Office of Admission gears up for Spring admissions, we’d like to remind you about our exciting Bring-a-Buddy program. If you a refer a friend to Army and Navy Academy, you’ll receive a $1000 credit at the Bookstore when he successfully enrolls. That’s a lot of Takis!
