TODAY IN HISTORY

Southern Pacific Railroad completes New Orleans to California Route

The Southern Pacific Railroad completes its transcontinental “Sunset Route” from New Orleans to California, consolidating its dominance over rail traffic to the Pacific.

One of the most powerful railroad companies of the 19th century, the “Espee” (as the railroad was often called) originated in an ambitious plan conceived in 1870 by the “Big Four” western railroad barons: Collis P. Huntington, Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford and Mark Hopkins. A year earlier, the Big Four’s western-based Central Pacific had linked up with the eastern-based Union Pacific in Utah, creating the first transcontinental American railway. With that finished, the “Big Four” began to look for ways to increase their control over West Coast shipping, and decided to focus their efforts on extending the California-based Southern Pacific southward.

UPDATES

Robotics

On Saturday 1 Feb 2025, our robotics Team Warrior competed for the first time in a regional robotics competition hosted by the 8th Brigade JROTC headquarters and executed by the JROTC cadre in San Diego. Our Team placed 3rd out of 24 teams and won the design award – the best robot design of the competition. Our team went to the competition with 5 members: Tyler Hansen – lead programmer and drive team coach, Nicolas Chestnut – hardware/builder, Arav Gupta – drive team scouter and notebook, Pratheek Ganta – notebook lead, and Cohen Lu – team captain and robot driver.

Every year, there is a new game for vex robotics. This year, it was to score donuts of the same color as your team onto “stakes” which the top most donut gives the most points. For the first 15 seconds of the match, the robot moves on its own without any human input. Whichever side gains the most points during this time period gets a bonus to their score. After this period, there is a minute and 45 seconds of driver control where the drivers would control the robot to move these mobile stakes to positive or negative corners which would add or subtract points on that mobile stake based on the color of the donut that is on the stake. During the last 30 seconds of this driver control period, robots can drive to the center of the field and extend to climb the ladder one step at a time.

The robotics competition itself consisted of qualification matches and elimination matches. In qualification matches, you are ranked based on how many wins you have and how many win points your robot scores during the matches. The higher you rank in qualification matches, the more priority you have on alliance selection as the matches are 2 teams vs 2 teams. When all the alliances are selected, they are put into a round robin system for the elimination matches. Our team sadly lost at the quarter finals as our robot got stuck.

Team Warrior had an amazing day of fun and met many other JROTC Cadets from many other states and cities.

ADMISSIONS: WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH $1000?

As the Office of Admission gears up for Spring admissions, we’d like to remind you about our exciting Bring-a-Buddy program. A number of cadets have already taken advantage of this program to recommend their friends to the Academy. If you a refer a friend to Army and Navy Academy, you’ll receive a $1000 credit at the Bookstore when he successfully enrolls. That’s a lot of Takis!

Please contact the Office of Admission up the stairs from the Mess Hall if you have any questions about this program.
