Weekend and Aquatic Activities

DCIM100GOPROGOPR1678.Weekends give Cadets the opportunity to enjoy some downtime or participate in some of our exciting weekend activities! There are some great activities to choose from.

The Beach

The highlight of the Academy’s on-campus weekend activities is the privately lifeguarded beachfront just steps away from each Cadet’s living quarters. The beach is generally open from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm on the weekends, and from 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm on weekday afternoons. This gives plenty of time for surfers, boogie boarders, and beach-goers to enjoy the Pacific coastline. It also allows Cadets some time out of uniform to catch some waves on the San Diego coast.

The Pool

The Academy’s six-lane, 25-yard pool is located on the northeast corner of campus. It is open on Saturdays from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm for a swim clinic, lap swim, and/or drop in water polo. The swim clinic allows Cadets who may have had a hard time passing the swim test continue to practice so they can achieve a better score on their next swim test. Cadets who like to swim for exercise may use the pool during this time, too. Sometimes, the pool is opened when the beach is closed due to weather or another reason for closure.

20150731_084245Lifeguard Courses

The Academy’s Weekend Aquatics Department offers on-campus Red Cross Lifeguard and United States Lifesaving Association Junior Lifeguard courses free of charge in the spring months. The Red Cross Lifeguard course offers actual Red Cross Lifeguard certification with a Cadet’s committed completion of the course.Once certified, Cadets can apply for employment at any pool accepting Red Cross Lifeguard Certification in the country.

This year’s course will be held on weekends between January 30 – February 14, 2016.

See the course flyer and program syllabus for more information. Please contact Keith Renzi at 760.547.5273 or by email to register or with any questions.

The Rec Hall

There is much more to do on campus during the weekends than just going to the beach. When Cadets don’t want to head out to the water, you often find them in the Rec Hall, looking over the beach with one of the best views of the ocean in all of Oceanside and Carlsbad. The Rec Hall houses two beautifully reupholstered pool tables, ping pong tables, video games, HD movies, and foosball tables, along with a canteen where Cadets can buy food and drinks. About once a month, Rec Hall Staff will facilitate and referee tournaments including football, whiffle ball, kickball, dodgeball, beach volleyball, and more. On rainy days, the Staff will often facilitate video game tournaments.

Trips are often the weekend’s most exciting and unique opportunity for Cadets. The Academy offers Cadets the option to sign up for many supervised trips for a small, usually discounted, fee.  Smaller trips include local shopping outings to the Westfield Mall and local stores and restaurants, like the Cinepolis Luxury Theaters, laser tag, Boomers, surfing trips, and more.  Larger, more exciting trips include charter fishing, theme parks like Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland, La Jolla kayaking trips, professional sporting events, Sea World Aquatica, and paintball at Camp Pendleton.
