Byrd Milic joined the Army and Navy Academy in September of 2015 after 27 years at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, CA.
A native of New York City, Milic earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Wichita State University, where he worked as an undergraduate assistant coach to the men’s basketball team. He returned to his hometown of New York City upon graduation with honors from Wichita State and worked as a physical education teacher and boys’ varsity basketball coach at the Birch Wathen School (Manhattan) and St. Ann’s. School (Brooklyn). Under his leadership, both Birch Wathen and St. Ann’s won league titles in basketball and soccer.
In 1989, Milic relocated to Los Angeles to work at The Buckley School as a physical education teacher and coach. While at Buckley, he created curriculum for preschool and primary grades while coaching middle and upper school teams in cross country, football, basketball, baseball, swimming, volleyball, and equestrian. In 1994 Milic was awarded the Rachel Lindley Award as the Teacher of the Year. In 2004 Milic was appointed the position of athletic director. Under his leadership, the Buckley School won numerous CIF Titles in team and individual sports. While at Buckley, Milic served as the coordinator of DMI (Diversity, Multi-Culturalism, and Inclusion) and consulted on refurbishing the gym, baseball field, and weight room.
